And of course, if you can only come for part of the conference, that's fine too (Friday and Saturday are the most important days, though Sunday is the day we demonstrate at the White House and get to hear from the most significant progressive Evangelical thinker in the US-Rev. Brian McLaren).

A MANHATTAN federal judge has ruled that a group of New York Army veterans who fell ill after inhaling depleted uranium dust from exploded U.S. shells can sue the federal government - but only for medical malpractice after their discharge.
A 1950 Supreme Court decision - commonly known as the Feres Doctrine - has long prohibited suits against the federal government by soldiers, U.S. District Judge John Koeltl ruled last week. "To the extent that the injuries asserted in the plaintiffs' complaint arise out of their military service . . . the court is without jurisdiction to hear those claims," Koeltl stated in his 29-page opinion.
George Zelma, the plaintiffs' lead lawyer, had argued during a Sept. 6 hearing that despite the broad prohibition of the Feres Doctrine, Congress had never intended "our government to betray its own troops." Koeltl rejected Zelma's argument, but he did allow the eight former National Guardsmen to sue the government for medical malpractice they allege was committed by Veterans Administration doctors after they were discharged back into civilian life.

over an eight week period. The largest snowfall since 1898.
There are some similarities between digging out of a mountain of snow, and digging out of the economic recession. While there are stabilizing signs, when the mound is big and seemingly impassable, it requires continual clearing to aid in the economic thawing. There remains much to be done. Times are tough. People are struggling just to make ends meet. As government, while we will not be able to solve this economic crisis in short order, we do have a duty, I believe, to listen and act with great sensitivity and greater empathy to the plight of our neighbors. Let’s put it into context. At the end of 2008, our nation faced the greatest economic crisis in a generation.
We were on the brink of a second depression with our nation’s economy contracting at a rate of over 6 percent, the worst we’d seen in five decades. Fear was widespread and confidence scarce. By the first quarter of 2009, our economy had lost an average of 750,000 jobs per month. Foreclosures were at record levels, and home prices had plummeted by 30 percent. Banks were in crisis, and nearly $10 trillion in wealth was lost.
Thus, the priority, a year ago, was to stop the economic bleeding, to create a measure of stability and to help those most harmed by the economic crisis. The White House and the Congress joined forces to pass the Economic Stimulus package – just a year ago, on February 13, 2009. The package combined tax relief and government spending for a total of $787 billion.
As Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, my goal was very simple. We needed to stabilize the economy because only then could we begin the long process of restoring confidence in the marketplace and hope at home. It was not a perfect measure by any stretch of the imagination, and getting it passed was not a glamorous process. But, we needed to act and act quickly.

Those appointed over me at 1976 Union Carbide in Indianapolis at 5700 W. Raymond did not like it when our plant manager was my boss's boss. The Chief Electrical Engineer gave no orders to me.
I worked for the plant manager. Before the plant manager left for Terrytown, NY, HQ (a HUGE PROMOTION), my department was absorbed into the Chief Electrical Engineer's turf. I was told that the honcho engineer was a Navy Veteran by the honcho engineer in his office - hatchet burying attempt.
The Plant Manager was sitting beside me across the room from every engineer at the meet and greet at the Airport Hilton when he told me, "Bob, I flew off carriers in World War 2." My boss and his boss both knew I was one of the best Navy Warbird Aviation Electronics Technicians.
The chief electrical engineer and his junior engineers saw the plant manager have a "ONE ON ONE" with me before he got to UCC CORPORATION's HEADQUARTERS!!!
